Goal of Reconnaissance
The goal of reconnaissance is to build a clear, accurate picture of the target environment before any deeper testing begins. In an authorized ethical hacking engagement, this phase helps the tester understand what assets exist, how they are exposed, which technologies are in use, and where the most valuable attack surface is located.
In simple terms, the goal is to:
- discover in-scope assets,
- map the external attack surface,
- identify technologies and services,
- find hidden or overlooked entry points,
- and prepare for precise, efficient testing in later phases.
Good reconnaissance reduces blind spots. It also helps avoid wasting time on low-value targets and lets the tester focus on areas most likely to contain real weaknesses, such as authentication, APIs, admin panels, cloud resources, and business-critical workflows.
